About BASE
What is BASE?
The CUTC BASE service is an intentions form which is checked on daily by the Safety Officer. Someone in your group should fill out this form prior to going on a trip. If you don’t make it out of the bush within your stated intentions, we will set Search & Rescue (SAR) on your case via the Police.
When should I use BASE?
We encourage everyone to use BASE on every trip — even if it’s a day trip, or you have a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). You must fill out this form if hiring a PLB off the club, and you should fill out the form if your trip was advertised through the club.
How do I use BASE?
- Fill out this form prior to your trip.
- Enjoy your trip! Have fun and stay safe.
- When you complete your trip, a member of your trip must check in. Contact the Safety Officer at:
base@cutc.org.nz or +64 22 470 8941
Obviously it’s still a great idea to let your friends / family / flatmates know where you are going. This is so they don’t get concerned that you’re away and in case there is a weird glitch (very unlikely) that prevent us from getting your intentions. We also strongly encourage you to pack a PLB.
What happens if I don’t return in time?
If we can’t contact any members, we will assess the situation and contact the Police sometime between 12–24 hours after the expected return time.
Will I be rescued immediately?
There is usually a grace period before the Police decide to send in SAR to rescue you. This is based on the information you provide in this form, such as your experience, medical conditions, food, gear, and if you have a PLB. The weather conditions will also be considered — nobody would expect you to cross a flooded river or put yourself in grave danger to get home!
If someone is in mortal danger, use your PLB immediately.
Do I have to pay if I get rescued?
No. SAR services are provided free of charge. But please make sure you provide the correct return date on your intentions form, because they’ll be more than annoyed if they come “rescue” you for no good reason!
Other questions?
